Does compression change the image format?

No. The output keeps the same format as the input (JPEG stays JPEG, PNG stays PNG, WebP stays WebP). If you want to change format, use the main image converter instead.

What quality setting should I use?

80 is a good default for photos: noticeably smaller with barely visible quality loss. Drop to 60 for maximum savings, or go to 90+ if you need near-original fidelity.

What does 'target size' do?

It searches for a quality setting that produces a file close to the size you specify (±5%). Works best for JPEG and WebP. Very small targets may sacrifice quality noticeably.

What does 'already optimal' mean?

Sometimes a file is already so small that recompression would make it larger. In that case we keep the original and label the result so you know it was not modified.
